"Much more than a reference book!, May 24, 2002
Reviewer: Brent Wheeler from Pretoria, South Africa
What a change to have a text book that covers theory and practise.
" Water distribution modelling" addresses the basics of data collection and input, through to the addressing of unaccounted for water and network calibration.
It serves as a useful companion to every engineer involved in reticulation design and is best used as a handy reference guide rather than a text book that remains on the library shelf.
The book also succeeds in addressing some matters, such as leakage control, that could not, and also should not, be addressed in detail in such a book. The book outlines common practise in such areas and refers the reader to more detailed documentation.
The reader is also provided with a copy of Water CAD that can be utilised to determine if the associated Haestad Methods software is more appropriate that alternative software that they may be utilising. However, as present non users of the associated software we at Africon find the book one of the more interesting and readable reference books on "Water distribution modelling"

Advanced Water Distribution Modeling And Management
Includes WaterCAD |
About the Book
|
 |
Advanced Water Distribution Modeling and Management builds on Haestad Press’ best-selling Water Distribution Modeling book. Addressing the modeling process from data collection to application, Advanced Water Distribution Modeling & Management includes all the material from the best-selling Water Distribution Modeling book plus many additional topics. |
The new 800-page release from Haestad Press adds extensive material from an international team of experts from both academia and consulting firms and includes topics such as:
- In-depth coverage of optimization techniques for model calibration, system design, and pump operations.
- Advanced water quality modeling topics including tank mixing, water quality solution algorithms, sampling techniques, tracer studies, tank design, and maintenance of adequate disinfectant residuals.

- Integration of SCADA systems with water distribution modeling for estimating model demands, initial conditions, and control settings; forecasting system operations; calibrating extended-period simulation models; streamlining water quality analysis; and estimating water loss during a main break.
- The essentials of transient analysis including the causes and sources of transients, as well as the potential effects of transients on water distribution systems.
- Application of GIS technology for skeletonization, demand allocation, and pipe break analysis; discussion of the technological issues that arise when integrating GIS and water distribution modeling; and the current state of the technology.
- Use of models to assess water system vulnerability and security, respond to emergencies in real-time, simulate contamination events, prioritize physical security improvements, and unravel past contamination events.
