Who Should Attend?
This course is recommended for design engineers,
hydrologists, and project managers faced with the
need to simulate the effects of synthetic or historic
rainfall events on watershed floodplains and/or
design facilities to convey or mitigate the resulting
flows. It is also excellent for existing DOS HEC-1
users wishing to make the transition to the
Windows-based HEC-HMS.
Training Overview
This three-day, hands-on training course balances
lecture material and class discussion with hands-on
software training for the FEMA-approved HEC-HMS
program developed by the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers. Course topics include historic and synthetic
rainfall events, loss models, unit hydrograph
techniques, baseflow models, calibration techniques,
storage and channel routing, and flow splits.
Data management using HEC-DSS utility programs
is also covered, as well as the use of HEC-HMS in
conjunction with HEC-RAS.
HEC-HMS Training Highlights
Runoff modeling concepts
Rainfall-runoff models
SCS models
HEC-HMS model configuration and output
Baseflow Models
Synthetic design storms
Historic rainfall and weighting gage data
Comparing results with observed data
Calibration procedures
Ungaged catchment studies
Data storage with HEC-DSS
Channel flood routing
Reservoir storage routing
Detention structures

Diversions
Using HEC-HMS with HEC-RAS
Course Materials
In this course, you will use the Windows-based
HEC-HMS software developed by the U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers to model a variety of watershed
situations. Hands-on workshop problems cover rainfall
and runoff modeling, channel and storage routing,
calibration of model parameters to match
recorded data, and review of model output.
HEC-HMS is approved by FEMA and can serve as
a replacement for HEC-1 for many types of analysis.
It is available as part of Haestad Methods
HEC-Pack, which also includes Graphical HEC-1,
HEC-RAS, and HEC-GIS.

Required Training For Certification
How can you distinguish yourself as an engineer who is staying abreast of the latest technology and applications in floodplain hydrology? The answer is certification. Certified training raises credibility with clients, proves your organization meets important training standards, and increases an engineer's contribution to an enterprise.
Each participant in this 3-day training series will earn the status of Certified Haestad Methods Master Modeler for Floodplain Hydrology - a testament to tough training. See Certification for more details.
